A short checklist on move-in week will set your door security right from the start.

Run through these steps in order and you will know exactly who can open your door, which is the entire point of having a lock in the first place.

Before Move-In Day: Know Your Door

DUMBO lofts vary enormously: some have original heavy timber or steel doors, others have modern replacements from recent renovations. If you can, visit the unit before moving day and note the lock types, whether there is a deadbolt as well as a latch, and the condition of the door frame. Ground-floor and second-floor units should have window locks or pins, especially on windows facing alleys or courtyards. Terrace doors need a proper deadbolt or auxiliary lock, not just the latch handle they shipped with.

In mixed-use buildings with commercial tenants downstairs, pay attention to the building's common entrance. A strong apartment door matters less if the front door of the building never latches. Raise access issues with building management early, while you are still the new tenant everyone wants to help.

Get Your Spare-Key System Organized

New neighborhood, new routines: set up your spare-key system in the first week. Leave one copy with a trusted neighbor in the building and one with a friend elsewhere in the city. Avoid hiding keys in planters or under mats, which are the first places anyone checks.

If your building permits it, a discreet lockbox gives you a backup that does not depend on anyone else being home. And if the idea of keys altogether feels outdated, this is the natural moment to install a smart lock, since you are setting up the door from scratch anyway.
